Who We Are
Oberrath Farms is a Christian farmily farm founded as a sole proprietorship by Jordan Oberrath in Waterford, Pennsylvania in 2022. Oberrath Farms is managed by husband and wife, Jordan and Drew Oberrath, and assisted by our children, including our adult sons Noah and Ethen.
What We Believe
We believe that Genesis depicts humans as having the special roles and responsibilities of dominion and stewardship in relation to animals. In Genesis humans are given dominion over animals, implying a responsibility to care for and manage them, while, the act of naming the animals suggests a personal and significant relationship between humans and animals. Overall, we believe these passages underscore a vision of stewardship, where humans are expected to rule over animals in a manner that reflects God's care and creativity.
What We Raise
We raise rabbits, various breeds of egg layer chickens, Cornish Cross meat chickens, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Angus, and White Park cows as well as pure Hampshire pigs and crosses of Hampshire boars with Meishan/IPP, Mangalitsa/Hampshire, and Berskshire/Yorkshire sows.
How They're Raised
We feed our animals with grain from the Erie Crawford Co-op, hay that was cut and baled with our own equipment, and whatever they eat out in the pasture. They receive fresh well water to drink each day. Piglets receive their first dose of Safeguard de-wormer after weaning, and 2 more throughout their growth if we raise them out. Our breeder pigs receive Ivermectin instead of Safeguard when returning to the pasture to ensure an accurate dosage and a healthy start to their pregnancies. Calves receive BoSe or MultiMin 90 as needed, which are Vitamin E and Selenium supplements prescribed by a veterinarian to fight and prevent against White Muscle Disease, which is common in young calves.
Where They're Raised
We raise our animals on pasture as much as possible, while providing the necessary shelter when and where it is needed, including our meat birds that are raised in a brooder area with heat lamps for only a week or two before going out in rotational grazing pens. Our breeder pigs spend nearly 1/2 of the year on straw within individual cement floored 5x10 pens where they finish out farrowing before feeding the piglets for 5 weeks, and recouping for a few more before joining the others on the pasture. Piglets are placed on pasture at 6 weeks, after weaning from mama at 5 weeks, and calves are placed on pasture at around 60-80 days, except in winter where they remain in the barn longer. Rabbits are raised communally in a barn with bucks and doe separate.
Where We Process
All of the large animals that we take in for processing are processed at Frozen Foods Center, 25 Market St, Union City, PA 16438, (814)438-2931. Once you reserve an order with us we reserve a date with them. We have taken dozens of animals to them since our founding and all of our customers have been happy with both the price and the service. Cornish Cross chickens are processed and packaged here on the farm according to the "Producer/Grower ? 10,000 Limit Exemption" under the Poultry Products Inspection Act, which allows small-scale poultry producers to process fewer than 10,000 chickens per year without USDA inspection, provided they meet sanitary standards.
